Resale of my windows xp liscense?
My dell crashed recently and I purchased a new macbook (i love it by the way) and before my dell crashed I purchased a full retail copy of windows sp sp2. I wanted to know if I could still sell my copy of windows with my serial which was activated and registered on my dell. And even if I could sell it would it pass the windows authentication part and do updates?
It would be a shame if I would have to throw it away… Thanks
If your retail copy was licensed for more than one user, then you can give the product code with the disc. If it is a single-user license, you can sell the media, but not the product code since it has been used already. If you sell the Dell and the copy of Windows together, it MAY work out for the purchaser if they get the machine running again.
The install process will go through just fine on another machine, but after 30 days Windows will demand activation. Which will not work, because when the activation wizard starts it phones home to Redmond. Which will dectect a previous activation on another machine.
It will be the same if you intend to use your Windows disc to install on your new MacBook. A previous install on a different machine will prevent activation and authentication for updates.
